Guangzhou, provincial capital of Guangdong, is situated in the north Pearl River delta, and is an important trading centre as well as a busy port. The city covers an area of 7,434.4 square kilometres and its population reached 14 million inhabitants in 2010.
Guangzhou has a sub-tropical climate. The average temperature is around 22°C. August is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 28°C. January is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 13°C. The rainy season lasts from April to August. The average annual rainfall is 1,720 mm.
Guangzhou is also one of the most important centres of foreign trade in South China. Since 1957, the Chinese Export Commodities Fair is held twice a year in the city, one in spring, and one in autumn. It is a cultural centre as well. There are several universities: the Zhongshan University, the South China University of Technology, the Ji-nan University and so on. There are also higher educational establishments. The city is renowned for its arts and crafts, namely the Guangdong embroidery, ivory-carving and ceramics.
Guangzhou is a beautiful city with evergreen scenery, where flowers are blooming all year round. The city boasts many tourist attractions, such as White Cloud Hill Scenic Spot, Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou Zoo, Six Banyan Temple, Flowery Pagoda, Dr. Sun Yatsen Memorial Hall, etc. In the Suburbs, there are scenic spots like Conghua Hot Springs, Xiqiao Hill Scenic spot, Seven Star Crags, and Foshan City. Many tourists like to discover one or two of those places for their pleasure.
"Eating in Guangzhou" has become a popular saying both in China and abroad. Guangzhou has a number of restaurants and tea-houses and thus ranks first for its tasty food in the country. Cantonese cuisine is good in colour, fragrance, taste and presentation. In addition, the delicate Cantonese pastry is also well-known for its wide range of varieties, delicious flavour and beautiful colour. Cantonese cuisine is one of the most famous of the country.
Guangzhou’s market is actually a succession of several markets spread over the city. There are so many wholesale markets here: Bai Ma Garment Wholesale Market, Liu Hua Clothes Wholesale Market, Yide Road Toys Wholesale Market, etc. You can find a large variety of goods in these markets, including shoes, watch, gift, toys, clothes, crafts, fashion jewellery, bags, decoration items, furniture, etc. Moreover the biggest furniture market in China is located in Foshan and it takes 1 hour by car from Guangzhou. There are also ceramics and steel wholesale market over there.
